for coverting to DVD format to put on a DVD not CD you need something like ConvertX to DVD . If the Xbox can play Avi's then you can use any burn program to burn to a CD (probably wont be big enough for most films)

wathcing films on PC, most software like Windows media Player, Divx, Real One etc wil play all movies apart from .MKV files which then you will need a special player

I recently gave TVeristy a go. It turns your PC into a hub for media and you just search for it on your Xbox. Media is then streamed over your network and it saves you the need to convert and burn everything.

On my media PC I use Media Portal as the front end and have done for quite a few years now.

For playing DVD's I use Windows Media Player, Winamp, Real player, Divx Player, depending on the source of the DVD.
For burning DVD''s, avi's, iso's, mp3's, wav's, well all my converting/burning is done using Ashampoo Studio 9 and for converting mp3 to wav and visa versa i use CDex.

Sweet lord - people actually use Real Player? Isn't it an evil bloated pile of terribleness? Or am I still l living in 2003 (highly likely)?

You only need one player to playback any video media on a PC, and that's VLC player. I've not found something that can't play yet.

Used to be terrible bloated seems ok now though, but tbh i have to add that i only use it because of the plugin it has to download videos/clips off web sites.
